Hot tub and sauna wiring

A hot tub or sauna needs its own circuit, the right protection, and a disconnect in the right spot. We size it from the manufacturer’s specs, run it, connect it, and get it inspected.

Before delivery day

  • Get the electrical spec sheet from the dealer. Most full-size tubs run on 240 volts at 40 to 60 amps.
  • Choose the spot with the disconnect in mind. It has to be within sight of the tub and at least five feet from the water.
  • Look up. Overhead power lines near a tub have clearance rules of their own.
  • Book the electrical ahead of delivery, so the tub can be filled and started the day it lands.

What a hot tub hookup includes

Plug-in 120-volt tubs are the exception. They still need a dedicated GFCI-protected outlet, and a patio outlet shared with other loads usually isn’t that.

  • A dedicated 240-volt circuit sized to the tub’s nameplate
  • GFCI protection for the circuit
  • An outdoor disconnect within sight of the tub
  • Conduit and wire rated for the outdoor run
  • The permit and the inspection

Sauna wiring

Electric sauna heaters run on 240 volts and draw a lot for their size. A typical home heater is 4.5 to 9 kilowatts, which means a 30- to 60-amp circuit, a control, and wiring rated for the heat inside the room. A barrel or other outdoor sauna adds an outdoor run, often underground, and a disconnect.

Can your panel carry it?

A 50-amp tub or a sauna heater is a large load. We run a load calculation on your service before quoting, so you know up front whether the panel can take it.

A home with a 200-amp service often has the capacity. A 100-amp home with electric heat or an electric range may not. Then the options include a subpanel or a service upgrade, and we explain what each would involve.

Permits and inspection

Hot tub and sauna circuits need an electrical permit. The inspector checks the circuit size, the GFCI protection, the disconnect location, and the bonding. The City of Vancouver inspects inside city limits. Washington L&I inspects everywhere else in Clark and Cowlitz County.

Process

How the job goes

  1. Check the panel

We look at your service and the spec sheet, and run a load calculation before quoting.

  2. Estimate and permit

You get a price for a defined scope. We pull the permit.

  3. Run the circuit

The circuit, the GFCI protection, and the disconnect go in, ahead of delivery if you like.

  4. Connect and inspect

Once the tub or sauna is set, we make the final connection and the work is inspected.

What affects the cost of a hot tub or sauna hookup

The tub or heater sets the circuit size. The yard sets most of the rest.

  • The distance from the panel to the tub or sauna
  • Whether the run goes through a crawl space, along the house, or in a trench
  • Concrete, decking, or landscaping in the path
  • The amperage of the circuit
  • Panel space and capacity

Questions

Things people ask us.

Does WestPeak Electric do hot tub and sauna wiring?

Yes. WestPeak Electric is a licensed electrical contractor (Washington license WESTPEL745M7). We do hot tub and sauna wiring throughout our service area. Call or text 360-521-6913, Monday to Friday, 7 AM to 5 PM.

Does a hot tub need its own circuit?

Yes. Most 240-volt tubs need a dedicated GFCI-protected circuit and a disconnect that is within sight of the tub and at least five feet from the water.

How far does the disconnect have to be from the hot tub?

At least five feet from the water, and within sight of the tub, so anyone servicing it can see that the power is off.

Can you wire the hot tub before it’s delivered?

Yes, and that is the better order. We run the circuit and set the disconnect ahead of time, then make the final connection once the tub is in place.

What does a sauna need electrically?

A 240-volt circuit sized to the heater, usually 30 to 60 amps, with wiring rated for the temperature inside the sauna. The heater’s installation manual gives the exact circuit size, and we work from that.

Do I need a permit to wire a hot tub?

Yes. A hot tub or sauna circuit is new wiring, so it needs an electrical permit and an inspection. Inside Vancouver city limits the City of Vancouver handles it. Everywhere else in Clark County it’s Washington L&I. We take care of both.
