How to check an electrician’s license in Washington

Washington keeps a public record for every electrical contractor. It takes two minutes to look one up, and it tells you most of what you need to know before you hire.

The short answer

Search the business name or license number on L&I’s Verify tool at secure.lni.wa.gov/verify. The record shows whether the license is active, whether there are lawsuits against the bond, any safety citations, the owners’ names, and the status of the workers’ comp account. It does not show liability insurance, so ask the contractor for a certificate.

Two different credentials

Washington licenses the business and certifies the people separately.

  • Electrical contractor license: held by the business. It requires a state business number (UBI), a $4,000 bond, and an assigned electrical administrator or master electrician.
  • Electrician certificate: held by the person doing the work. L&I requires all electrical work to be done by properly certified electricians.
  • A general (01) electrical contractor may do all types of electrical work. A specialty license is limited to one category.
  • The contractor license runs for two years and then has to be renewed.

What the Verify record shows

L&I updates the database on weekdays, so a change made today may not show until tomorrow.

  • Whether the contractor’s license is active
  • Lawsuits against the bond
  • Safety citations and other infractions
  • The names of the business owners
  • Whether a workers’ comp account is active and paid, if the business has employees

What it doesn’t show

General liability insurance. L&I recommends it for electrical contractors but doesn’t require it, so the state record can’t confirm it. Ask for a certificate of insurance. That goes for us too.

Questions worth asking before you hire

  • What is your electrical contractor license number?
  • Who pulls the permit, and under which license?
  • Will the work be inspected?
  • Can I see a certificate of insurance?
  • What exactly is in the price, and what isn’t?
